Pumpkin Stew - Gumadikaya Pulusu

Pumpkin Stew - Gumadikaya Pulusu

Few day ago a colleague at work gave me a piece of pumpkin that his daughters had grown at school. I had option of either making pumpkin soup or traditional Andhra gumadikaya pulusu.
I love gummadikaya pulusu since its sweet, tangy and spicy at the same time, especially with pumpkin since it add a sweet flavor so made pulusu.

This is a recipe I posted already but since few months learnt it to make a little different ie making it without using rice flour.

½ pumpkin cut into small cubes, with the skin on
1 small onion sliced thinly
1 small tomato cubed
3-4 drum sticks
1 Green chili (adjust accordingly)
Tamarind size of a quarter
3-4 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp Rice flour
For Thadka
1 tbsp Urad dal
1 tbsp Jeera
1 tbsp Mustard seeds
½ tbsp hing
8-10 curry leaves
2-3 red chilies

1. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pan, when hot add all the ingredients for tadhka, when mustard seeds start to splutter
2. Add onions, tomato, G.chili, salt and haldi and saute for a minute or 2
3. Now add 2 cups water, add tamarind ,Pumpkin allow it to boil until Pumpkins are fork tender
4. Now add sugar and check for salt adjust accordingly
5. Allow to boil for 3-4 minutes and remove from heat and garnish with coriander leaves.

Serve hot with rice and tastes well the next day too.
