After years enjoyed a truly well played game, worthy opponent, great team and above all can-do/will-do attitude, Indian Team truly rocked. Farmers Market Buy- Pav Bhaaji

What was supposed to be a busy weekend turned out to be a quite one thanks to the weather, never the less made the best and hit the mall for hours, what is a girl to do when given a option to shop, nothing better then retail therapy I say.  It's still pouring in bayarea and signs of spring seem far away.

Every sunday we have a farmers market close to home and with this weather all we get is fresh greens and root vegetables. Picked vine ripe tomatoes ,I love vine ripe tomatoes extremely delicious and sweet that it seems like a crime to cook anything . Picked up capsicum, carrot, tomatoes and cilantro too this week.

Pav Bhaji is a favorite of mine though it belongs to the chat clan it makes a complete meal by itself. The fact that my kids love it is a big incentive . Spices used overpower vegetables in this dish hence adding vegetables to your choice to hearts content does not alter the flavor.

Ingredients for Bhaji
3 medium sized capsicum
2 tomatoes
2 carrots peeled and cubed
3 medium sized potatoes peeled and cubed
1 cup peas fresh or frozen
2-3 green chilies ( adjust according to taste)
1/2 cup of coriander leaves
2 medium sized onion chopped finely
3 tbsp butter ( I know, I know but trust me skipping butter just kills the flavor for me personally)
1 tbsp of ginger garlic paste ( optional)
1/3 cup of pav Bhaji masala ( My all time favorite MDH pav bhaji masala)
salt according to taste

Process
1. boil potaotes, capsicum, peas,carrot and chillies with salt in a pressure cooker.
2. While vegetables are being cooked heat a pan big enough to hold the boiled vegetables
3. Add butter and when melted add ginger garlic paste and saute for few seconds
4. Add onions and saute till they turn golden brown takes about 4-5 minutes
5. Now add cubed tomatoes and little water and saute till tomatoes and onion forms a paste.
6. Add boiled vegetables and pav bhaji masala and use a potato masher to mash all the vegetables till it forms to a mush add water as required
7. Check for salt and top with a little bit of butter and serve hot.



Toast Pav on the tava/griddle on both sides with butter, add bhaji and top with onion,tomatoes and sprinkle with lemon juice and savor.

Cold weather,spicy pav bhaji and scrabble with kids that pretty much wrapped my beautiful weekend.

I am going through a phase of juicing ever since I brought Vitamix I feel compelled to justify the price paid for the blender. Well no complaints so far, it does what it promises to out of the world smoothies.
Enjoyed a variety fruit combination smoothies, best part kids love it and I have my work cut out about giving them fruit a day.

Made Orange carrot juice yesterday morning it was delicious, refreshing and had such a cooling effect on the stomach.


2 carrots
2 oranges skin peeled
1 tbsp of agave (sugar substitute)
2 tbsp of lemon juice
1/2 cup of ice cubes

Run it through the vitamix and a minute later refreshing carrot orange juice is ready. For the first time I let go of my morning cup of coffee for a cup of  juice, I see this as a positive sign for my caffeine addiction.

Gooseberry Pickle - Usirikaya Pachadi

This recipe was in drafts for weeks, made this sometime last year during holidays. This recipe is courtesy of a very dear friend, she is an awesome cook hands down one of the best , her dishes are out of the world ,authentic and extremely tasty, I fear going to eat at her home because how much ever I try I always overeat.This is one of her trademark recipe and she was sweet enough to share it with me and all my dear readers.
Gooseberries were my favorite treats growing up, marinated in salt water they were perfect snacks right after school.

Today's recipe I used frozen gooseberries, now fresh ones might be great but it made no difference at all.  Extremely simple recipe requires very little prep time and makes for one satisfying pickle, keeps well for about a week or two refrigerated.


Ingredients
about 10 medium sized gooseberries
2tbsp urad dal
pinch of hing
2 tbsp jeera/cumin
2 tbp grated coconut
2-3 green chilies (adjust according to taste)
salt according to taste
1/4 th cup pf mint leaves
8-10 curry leaves
1/4 th cup coriander leaves
2  tbsp yogurt
tbsp tumeric

For seasoning
1/2 tbsp cumin/jeera/urad
2-3 red chilies
about a tbsp oil
ping of hing

Process
1. Cut the frozen gooseberries into small pieces add turmeric and salt and keep aside
2. In a pan add urad dal,hing,jeera and saute for few seconds
3. Now add marinated gooseberries, above toasted spices, green chillies,mint, coriander,curry leaves,coconut and grind into a fine paste.
4. Now add yogurt and run the processor/mixer once again
5. Check for salt and adjust accordingly.
6. heat a pan add oil and all the ingredients for thadka and saute till mustard seeds start to splutter.
7. Add the above to gooseberry yogurt mixture and mix well.


This goes very well with rice, keeps well when refrigerated for about two weeks.

Attended a 3rd birthday party celebrations of a dear friends son yesterday, what a beautiful evening it was , there is something very cute about boys or kids at age three their innocence , questions they ask or the twinkle in their eyes when they learn of something new truly an age to be celebrated.Birthday boy yesterday is a bundle of energy seriously haven't seen such energy and cuteness bundled into one, he had a blast and so did the guests. Now one of the highlights of the party was cupcakes , hostess choose to celebrate with cupcakes and was that a super hit with kids and adults alike or what. Cupcakes were so cute and adorable it indeed was hard to bite into those cute critters.  I unfortunately did not get a chance eat as I was in a no desserts phase my elder son however vouched that it's the best cupcake he has ever eaten.

I have this urge to share anything new and exciting I see or learn with my readers and this prompted me to start a series on my blog called bayarea resources, will use this space to update with things that excite me in the bayarea especially around kids be it party ideas, eateries, camps well anything I think that's worth sharing. Peppercorns,Greens & Quinoa - Oh So Easy !!

My love for Quinoa as you can see is still going strong, I am amazed at how common Quinoa has become, got quite a few recipes and ideas from friends and today is one such recipe courtesy a good friend.

Super easy to make and trust me once you try it there will be no going back, so here goes


1 cup quinoa
2 tbsp pepper corns
1 tspn freshly grated ginger
1 cup of mixed fresh greens ( coriander, spinach and fenugreek leaves are what I used , you can add your choice of greens that saute well)
pinch of turmeric (optional)
tspn cumin & coriander powder 
salt according to taste

Process
1.Lightly saute quinoa over medium heat for 1~2 minutes till the seeds get light brown.
2.Now add two cups of water to the sauteed quinoa and cook covered for about 8 minutes or until quinoa is done.
3. Remove from heat and allow to cool down, quinoa fluffs up once it cools down.
4. Heat a tbsp of oil  add freshly grated ginger, cumin & coriander powder, turmeric, peppercorns and saute for few seconds until you get a strong aroma.
5. Now add finely chopped greens and saute for 2- 3 minutes.
6. Add fluffed quinoa and salt and gently toss all the ingredients till they are mixed well.

Remove from heat and enjoy a bowl full of guilt free goodness. Sprinkle fresh lemon juice if you want too.

Venezia - Travelogue Venice in pictures

Last summer we had a fantastic  European vacation, visited Italy and Switzerland, it's was hands down the best trip we ever took, kids were at a perfect age where they are very independent . Today's post is a picture louge of our trip to Venice. Venice is how do I say magical, mysterious, beautiful and much much more. I really hope I do get to visit this fairy tale like city once again. I just can't do justice to Venice with my writing , check all the facts and history about Venice here.

First impression as they say is the best impression, moment we stepped out of the ferry and starting walking toward our hotel, which can be very tricky given the narrow streets and cobble stoned pathways it was just breath taking , perfect summer morning, clear skies and cool wind blowing, this will be a memory etched in my brain forever.


It's one thing to read all about Venice and one thing to experience it real time, never could imagine life built around canals and water ways takes your breath away.

Beautiful display of restaurant menu, it's was truly an experience to get a ferry cab and eat with water touching your feet well almost.

Every nook and corner of Venice you see canals and gondola's.

View of Grand canal  from Rialto Bridge which is a buzz with tourist activity a major hub of water taxi's and ferries.


Water taxi's are a way of life and are used to transport people and goods.

The very famous Piazza San Marco square, it was hot and crowded and yet I would not trade for any other time to visit. June through August are the most busiest seasons , if you ask me I think it's the best time to experience nature's bounty.

Well a trip to Venice is never complete until you purchase Venetian mask, incidentally this week marks the end of the famous Venice carnival.


Took a sunset ride on a gondola, pure magic.
It was amazing to get dropped at the restaurant via a gondola.


One thing that's was very clear at every restaurant we ate was the emphasis on the quality of ingredients , every meal was drool worthy and worth every penny, simple ingredients and out of the world taste. Thin crust pizza with olives was my favorite.
Tomatoes are fruit and Venice confirms the fact, sweet and juicy. Bruschetta had it every meal be it dinner or lunch.


Italy and desserts are synonymous, was surprised at how much pistachios were used in addition to chocolate. Feasted on desserts to hearts content,  the picture makes me want to go back and relive all those dessert moments.
